Spring PlayStreets
Presented by:
The Buffalo Police Athletic League (Buffalo PAL) launched PlayStreets in the summer of 2020, modeling it after the historic New York City PAL program. It is a mobile initiative where Buffalo PAL staff, specialized coaches, and officers from the Buffalo Police Department travel directly into various neighborhoods to provide youth with free sports sampling clinics, artistic activities, and healthy snacks.
The program now operates across two seasonal blocks—Summer and Fall
Core Objectives
- Health and Wellness: Providing at-risk youth with consistent opportunities to stay physically active and fit outdoors year-round.
- Removing Barriers: Eliminating transportation and equipment obstacles by bringing recreational and educational resources directly to the neighborhoods where youth live.
- Positive Mentorship: Cultivating meaningful relationships between youth, their peers, and law enforcement officers in a fun, safe environment.
- Civic Engagement: Teaching youth to identify and connect with their local council members, District Police Precincts, and other elected officials to foster a sense of community ownership.
- Skill Development: Using a sports sampling model that introduces various activities—such as soccer, basketball, and Kickball—to spark long-term interest in league play and healthy lifestyle habits.
